Listening to Sara Cox playing “The Love Cats” by the Cure on Radio 2 yesterday, I started to think about how many songs name check our favourite feline friends. To start with, I think the Cure song would be pretty hard to beat, mentioning as it does cats landing the right way up and drinking cream. It seems to get the whole cat lazy lifestyle off pat in a perfect three minute pop song.
Also up there in the top ten would have to be “Cool for Cats” by Squeeze. It’s a pure “catnip” catchy number but actually has very little in it about cats!
For novelty value, you would have to go for “What’s new Pussycat?” by Tom Jones – a real purrfect belter from the Welsh Wizard.
One of my favourite eras was the 80’s and so a classic of that time that mentions cats is “Stray Cat Strut” by the Stray Cats. Rockabilly Cats, what’s not to like?!
Anyway I could on like this for ages, but I’ll just finish with a very funny song featuring the cartoon characters Sylvester and Tweetie Pie – “I Taut I Taw a Puddy Tat”
Enjoy the video! It’s got a nice happy ending too….
